Welcome to Year 2 - a very important year for your child as they complete Key Stage One of their education, in readiness for their entry into Key Stage Two.
Year 2 pupils work throughout the year towards their SATs (Standard Assessment Tests/Tasks) which provides a benchmark for their development at the end of this stage of their primary education. The SATs assess the children in the core areas of English, mathematics and science, the outcomes of which are communicated to parents within their end of year school report.
At Rise Park Infant School, Year 2 children are set three times per week for maths and some aspects of literacy, to ensure that every child receives a dedicated teaching programme that is tailored to their individual needs. Booster groups are also provided for children with special needs or for more able children who would benefit from further challenge.
Year 2 children are offered places in our extra-curricular activities, such as football, sports multiskills, art club, choir, dance and peripatetic music lessons. They also attend educational visits which support their topic work, as well as working with visiting experts who are invited into school. These enrichment activities foster the development of the whole child as they progress within the Infant School.
Year 2 participate in regular assemblies and performances for parents, such as Harvest Festival, Christmas Concerts, a Spring Assembly and a Leavers’ Service, all of which help to increase their maturity and self-confidence in preparation for their entry into Year 3 at Rise Park Junior School.
Links between the Infant and Junior Schools are constantly strengthening, with transitional activities such as a Year 5/Year 2 “buddy system” having been introduced to encourage a greater degree of working partnership between the two key stages. Subject leaders in both schools are also working closely together to ensure that there is smooth continuity and progression within their subjects for the pupils of Rise Park, enabling them to become well rounded and responsible citizens of our school community.
